What is Hydrocodone?

Hydrocodone is a powerful opioid typically prescribed as a painkiller to address moderate to severe pain, particularly after surgery. Hydrocodone is currently the most popular and most prescribed drug in the United States. A popular brand name for hydrocodone is Vicodin®.

While hydrocodone has many legal medical uses, since it is an opioid it also has the propensity to be used and abused recreationally. Even when used as medically directed, there is a chance of dependency or addiction developing if hydrocodone is taken for more than two weeks consecutively.

What Is Inpatient Hydrocodone Rehab Like?

At Restorations Healthcare in Anaheim, inpatient rehab begins after you have successfully completed the detoxification process, whether that be with us at our Southern California treatment facility or at another detox facility.

Before starting your inpatient hydrocodone treatment program, you will sit down with one of our treatment professionals who will evaluate you and create a custom treatment plan based on the results of that evaluation.

Upon starting your inpatient rehab program, you will live at the rehab center for the duration of your treatment. Inpatient treatment programs typically last anywhere from 2-4 weeks but can vary based on the recommendation of your treatment professional.

During inpatient rehab, you will be given a daily schedule that you will be expected to adhere to. You will also be expected to follow all treatment center rules at all times.

Your schedule will map out every aspect of your day including:

  • Times and locations of your various therapy sessions and other rehab activities
  • Meal times
  • What time you wake up and go to sleep
  • Any downtime you may have

Hydrocodone Addiction Treatment

Since hydrocodone falls under the opioid umbrella, hydrocodone addiction can be addressed and treated with therapy, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), or both.

Medications are often administered during the detox process in order to address hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms. In some cases, these medications might continue to be administered during and even after inpatient rehab as part of a MAT program.

Medications that have been FDA-approved to treat the side effects of hydrocodone addiction include:

  • Methadone
  • Suboxone
  • Naltrexone
  • Buprenorphine
  • Lofexidine
  • Naloxone

Psychotherapy and behavioral therapy have also proven to be effective in treating hydrocodone addiction.

Behavioral therapy is based on the idea that patients get rewarded for not succumbing to temptations and cravings. Psychotherapy goes a little bit deeper. Psychotherapy helps identify the source of the addiction. The idea is by learning what caused the patient’s addiction, they can learn from previous mistakes and be better prepared to deal with temptations and triggers in the future in a more healthy manner.

Support Groups

Therapy and medication are just part of the overall recovery process. Support groups such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and SMART Recovery are also important because they offer those in recovery a safe and supportive environment to share what they have been going through with other people who can understand and relate to what they are dealing with.

Benefits of Hydrocodone Rehabilitation

Going to rehab allows you to properly address and treat your hydrocodone addiction surrounded by treatment professionals and other patients, all of whom want to see you succeed.

Inpatient rehab specifically provides a safe space for you to focus on your treatment without any of the distractions or temptations that come with everyday life. Inpatient rehab also comes with additional services such as access to medical care and monitoring from our trained medical professionals.

Additionally, since many who suffer from hydrocodone addiction also suffer from mental health issues (also known as co-occurring disorders), inpatient treatment provides the opportunity for multiple conditions to be treated at the same time.

Typical Schedule of Inpatient Rehab for Hydrocodone Abuse

The length of time you spend in inpatient rehab can vary based on a number of factors. While the average stay in rehab is 30 days,  based on your treatment plan your stay may be longer or shorter.

While participating in inpatient rehab, you will be given a highly structured daily schedule that you will be expected to follow. Your schedule will include everything from where and when your therapy sessions are, to what time you eat your meals, and even what time you are expected to wake up in the morning and go to bed at night. While there might be a time in your day for downtime, that too will be included in your schedule.
